In Brief: Water move.

SCOTTISH & Southern Energy posted rising profits yesterday as it said it had applied to enter the water sector for the first time. The owner of Southern Electric, Scottish Hydro Electric and Swalec in Wales has asked regulator Ofwat for "Inset Appointments", which allow it to offer multi-utility services to customers. The move, described by chief executive Ian Marchant as "the best way of dipping our toe in water, came as SSE said half-year underlying profits rose 35.4% to pounds 455.4m.
