Improving Cancer Care Puts Employers on Track for Reducing Costs.

Florida School District Making Strides to Reform Employee Health Care

TAMPA, Fla. -- Med-Vision, LLC, a health plan and risk management strategy firm, invited Biologics, Inc., an oncology management company, to Tampa earlier this month to present a cancer management workshop to Pasco County schools. The district is currently working with Med-Vision among other experts to reduce health care costs and improve healthcare for its 8,500 employees.

"Forward-thinking employers, like Pasco schools, are a perfect fit for Biologics' services because everything we do is about putting the patient at the center of care. By placing the focus on the patient, quality of care is improved, which, in turn, reduces costs," said Stuart Frantz, chief executive officer of Biologics. Biologics provides a patient-focused platform for managing the financial, emotional, clinical, and physical challenges of cancer.

Pasco's director of employee benefits, Mary Tillman, could relate much of the workshop to her experiences with a co-worker navigating the cancer maze.

"My aha moment was seeing that an oncology certified nurse could help the cancer patient go from a fragmented system of people and advice over to an aligned approach for getting the best possible treatment," said Tillman.

As the industry's average cost per cancer case reaches $85,000, Biologics also pointed to substantial financial savings resulting from early identification, validation of treatments following evidence-based guidelines, and their prospective process for providing in depth clinical claim audits.

These actions could fall in line with Pasco's current health planning. In addition to signing on with Med-Vision in August, the Pasco School Board approved a contract with Crowne Consulting Group, of Orlando, to open three, on-site, CareHere clinics in January catering to Pasco's employees.

Tillman added, "In school districts, we typically have our employees for 30 years, so it makes financial sense to look into everything we can to keep those employees healthy."
