Imposition of taxes in Malakand Division rejected.
TIMERGARA -- The Awami National Party (ANP) central secretary information and former senator Zahid Khan said the people of Malakand division would strongly resist imposition of taxes in the region. Talking to local journalists at Chakdara here he said that Malakand was a tax free zone under a constitutional cover. He said that local residents of Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Swat and other districts have been taxed in telephone and electricity bills which would never be accepted.
'We reject any kind of taxation, direct or indirect and demand of the government to avoid imposition of tax in Malakand,' Mr Khan said, adding the people in the past too had rejected such decisions of the governments. He said the ANP had hosted three multipartite conferences on the issue in past and would brought all parties again on the table if the government did not stop taxing the people of Malakand.
The ANP leader said the people of Malakand had given a heavy mandate to the Pakistan Tehrek Insaf in general election and now it was the responsibility of the PTI lawmakers to get them rid of this unpopular act of the government. He said the PTI lawmakers from the region should play their role now. The ANP leader asked traders' bodies, political leadership and civil society to get united against the imposition of taxes in Malakand division. He said the ANP would soon hold an all parties conference at Chakdara in this regard.
