Imola to host GP2 Asia Series final round.

IMOLA has replaced Bahrain as the host of the final round of this year's GP2 Asia Series. The event will take place from March 18 to 20 at the San Marino track.

The final round was originally scheduled to be held at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir from March 11 to 13 in support of the Formula One Gulf air Bahrain Grand Prix.

But since the Grand Prix was put off due to the ongoing unrest happening in the kingdom, GP2 Asia has also been forced to postpone its event, and now Imola have been announced as the new hosts.

"I know that it is quite peculiar to have Imola added to the GP2 Asia calendar, but the special circumstances had us try and find the best solution for our teams, drivers and fans," GP2 Series chief executive Bruno Michel said.

"It was important for everyone to have one last round, and with the tests in Europe starting soon and the logistical requirements, we had to find a European venue.

"We had to be quick and think on our feet and we are happy to return to Imola. The new layout and infrastructures make it the perfect place to host the final round of the 2011 GP2 Asia Series."

GP2 will be making its first return to the San Marino track since 2006, where Gianmaria Bruni and Ernesto Viso respectively triumphed for Trident Racing and iSport International.

Imola is also where the GP2 Main Series held its first-ever race weekend in 2005, with now-F1 ace Heikki Kovalainen winning the feature race for Arden International and Adam Carroll snatching victory in the sprint race for Super Nova Racing.

Bahrain was originally set to host two rounds of the GP2 Asia Series this year. The first event was in February, and the teams, drivers, officials and all their equipment were already in the kingdom.

The round was however called off at the very last minute due to safety issues.

All cars and equipment have now been flown back to Europe.
