Immigrant council in cuts alert; BUDGET.

IMMIGRATION measures need to be drastically improved following Budget cuts, it was warned yesterday.

The Immigrant Council of Ireland said the process to screen migrants is already way behind and is causing hardship for applicants.

The group has called for publicly available rules that will help speed the process up for desperate migrants.

Denise Charlton of the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service said: "Migrants are waiting years, literally, for decisions on applications dealing with issues as fundamental as whether or not they can continue to live in the country.

"The Budget cut to INIS will inevitably create even longer decision-making times, causing greater hardship."
