The editors (professors of radiology from the U. of North Carolina School of Medicine, Johns Hopkins U., and George Washington U. in the United States; Monash U. in Australia, and U. of Zurich in Switzerland) present a two-volume textbook on image-guided interventions (i.e. guiding medical devices using imaging) that is intended to be used in conjunction with Image Consult, an online diagnosis- and decision-support tool which will feature annotated images, answers to clinical questions, more extensive references linked to PubMed, patient cases with images focusing on the desired clinical topic, and links to full reference content. The first volume and a significant part of the second collect 122 chapters covering vascular interventions, those interventions performed via the vascular system (arterial, venous, and lymphatic). This material is organized into sections on the history of angiography and intervention, vascular diagnosis, instruments of intervention, patient care, principles of vascular intervention, vascular anatomy, peripheral arterial intervention, vascular malformations, abdominal vascular intervention, pelvic vascular intervention, thoracic vascular intervention, head and neck vascular intervention, venous intervention, venous sampling for endocrine disease, intervention in portal hypertension, hemodialysis access management, venous access, and intervention in the lymphatic system. The remaining 46 chapters are concerned with nonvascular intervention, which is performed via direct percutaneous access to the site of interest. These are organized into sections discussing general considerations, percutaneous drainage and biopsy, intervention in the gastrointestinal tract, the biliary tract, the liver, intervention in the genitourinary tract, intervention in the thorax, musculoskeletal intervention, and percutaneous pain management. Color illustrations and tables are included.
