Iloilo all set to host APEC meetings.

ILOILO CITY -- The province of Iloilo is all set to host the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) ministerial meetings this month following the completion of a new convention center in the city.

President Aquino led the inauguration of the P713-million Iloilo Convention Center (ICC), located inside the Iloilo Business Park, during a visit in the province.

"Kongkretong halimbawa po itong Iloilo Convention Center na sa Daang Matuwid, ang pera ng bayan, napupunta sa taumbayan lamang [The Iloilo Convention Center is a concrete example that under the straight path, public funds benefit only the people]," Aquino said in his remarks.

"Layunin nitong maging sentro ng mga kumperensiya at pagtitipon, di lang sa inyong lungsod, lalawigan, at rehiyon, kundi maging sa mga karatig na rehiyon. Ang good news nga po: Nakatakda na itong gamitin para sa malalaking pagtitipon tulad sa Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation hanggang Oktubre [This aims to serve as the center of conferences and meetings not only in your province and region but nearby regions too. The good new is: this will be used for big gatherings such as the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation until October]," he added.

The two-storey convention center, built on a 1.7-hectare lot donated by Megaworld chair Andrew Tan to the government, will host three APEC meetings from September 21 to October 6.

The pet project of Senate President Franklin Drilon became controversial last year when overpricing charges were hurled against the developers. Last May, the Office of the Ombudsman junked the graft charges against Drilon and company in connection with the construction of the building.

The convention center, designed by renowned Ilonggo architect William Coscolluela, features the "paraw" design, a sailboat native to the Visayas, with the walls decorated with images of the Dinagyang Festival.
