Election Day in the Land of Lincoln mirrored the rest of the
country for statewide races. Incumbent Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) was
victorious over state Treasurer Judy Baar Topinka. This leaves
Republicans in the state in a pinch. They no longer hold any statewide
offices and now are looking for new, recognizable faces to represent the
Party. To make matters worse, exit poll information from the Associated
Press indicated that 46 percent of people identified themselves as
Democrats, up from 39 percent two years ago. The percentage of
Republicans went down from 34 percent two years ago to 31 percent this
year.
