Igemoligists and Laboratories is an independent jewelry appraisal service in Little Rock. While it does not buy or sell jewelry, it certifies clients' jewelry for insurance, estate, liquidation, bankruptcy and market value purposes.

Owner Alexandra Palombi-Long, who has been an appraiser for seven years, said there is a unmet demand for jewelry appraisal in Arkansas.

"I worked at a jewelry store and found that people weren't getting the right appraisal," Long said.

Long said many people have their jewels appraised at jewelry retailers, who are not independent, which distorts the real value.

"They might try to push the clarity and color--and the difference can be thousands of dollars," Long said.

Igemoligists offers a complete report on the jewel. Each piece is appraised while the customer watches.

Long is a member of the American Society of Appraisers and a certified gemologist in both the United States and Europe, having graduated from the Gemological Institute of America at Carlsbad, Calif., and the National Institute of Gemology in Paris.

"I also have a master's in art history, so I am very knowledgeable about antique jewelry and signed pieces including Cartier and Tiffany," said Long. "I love the discovery of the piece each time--the stone the artist used, the metal. It's just the whole beauty of the jewelry that I love."
