Idol judge Paula: I was hooked on painkillers; ADDICTION.
AMERICAN Idol judge Paula Abdul has revealed she used to be addicted to prescription pills.
The 46-year-old pop singer admitted she was hooked on painkillers for 12 years after a series of serious injuries.
She checked into the La Costa Resort and Spa in California last November to free herself from the dependency.
Abdul said: "I could have killed myself. Withdrawal - it's the worst thing.
"I was freezing cold, then sweating hot, then chattering and in so much pain. It was excruciating.
"But I did not like existing the way I had been."
Abdul, who also used Chinese medicine, claimed the dependency came about after she injured her back when she was a 17-year-old cheerleader.
She was also involved in a plane crash in 1993 in which she hurt her neck.
In 2005 she was diagnosed with sympathetic dystrophy syndrome, a chronic condition, for which she was prescribed a pain patch, nerve medication and sometimes a muscle relaxant
But Abdul said that the combination made her "get weird" .
Now she feels 96 per cent better thanks to her 15th operation, yoga and spiritual workshops.
