Consolidation continues

The OTC healthcare market is characterised by a distinct shift towards consolidation. By far the most significant development was the acquisition by Bayer Consumer Care of Roche Consumer Health, finalised in July 2005. Combining the two businesses will enable Bayer to tap significant synergies and supplement its product range with internationally known brands such as Rennie (digestive remedies) and Feminax (analgesics).

In October 2005, Boots Group Plc announced its intention to sell Boots Healthcare International, its consumer health business, to Reckitt Benckiser, in line with its strategic focus on its retail pharmacy business. The divesture will clear the way for Boots's proposed merger with Alliance Unichem Plc, the third largest pharmacy network in Europe.
