Ice injures two at Sterling DPW.

STERLING -- Two Sterling DPW workers were hurt by falling ice Wednesday afternoon.

According to Fire Chief David Hurlbut Jr., the pair were working outside when a chunk of ice broke off the DPW garage roof, slid down and hit them.

One was hurt "fairly badly'' and taken by ambulance to UMass-Memorial Hospital, where he was admitted, Hurlbut said. The second was taken to Clinton Hospital for observation, then released.

Hurlbut estimated the solid piece of ice was approximately 4-by-2- or 3-feet, and between 300 and 400 pounds.

The chief said the "timing couldn't have been worse'' for the two. They heard the ice coming, and turned, but could not get out of the way.
