Ibuprofen For Sunburn: Does It Work?

A long day at the beach can have its pros and cons. For one thing, it can be a really fun-filled day, whether you're just doing some sunbathing on your own or swimming with family and friends. The beach simply is a really fun place to spend a day or two. On the other hand however, it can get pretty hot out there, and if you're not careful, you might end up going home redder (and sorer) than usual.

That's a classic case of sunburn, and if you go home covered in it, everything might feel painful to the touch. But don't reach for the lotion or aloe vera just yet. Instead, we recommend you to take some Ibuprofen. You read that right. According to Dendy Engelman, a dermatologic surgeon, taking a shot of Ibuprofren (400 to 800 mg for every eight hours) is the right way to cure the massive inflammation of your skin cells caused by the pesky UV rays. The better you decrease the inflammation, the faster you heal. And so, an over-the-counter ( anti-inflammatory medicine like Ibuprofen should do the trick.

As it turns out, a previous research has shown that while aloe vera can help soothe the pain, it does nothing in terms of healing the damage on your skin and is actually no more effective than a placebo effect.

And if you want more relief, taking a 15 minute bath with a cup of apple cider vinegar comes highly recommended as well. In fact, the relief apple cider will bring is much more effective than aloe vera. Its acetic acid can help take off the dead skin cells so your body can start replacing them with new ones.

Cooling a sunburned spot in your body with a soft washcloth soaked in icy water should also provide long-lasting relief. To help prevent any deeper damage, you may opt to trying a vitamin C serum.

If left untreated, sunburn can lead to dry skin as well as pronounced wrinkle lines on your skin. And so, it's important to keep it moisturized and to be aware of how to best treat it.
