Ian Hyland's TV week: Cracker of a romance for old Jim.

Byline: Ian Hyland

NORMALLY the sight of a saggy-looking bird going "gobble, gobble" in the Slaters' backyard would barely raise a whisper in Albert Square.

But Mo's runaway turkey did provide welcome light relief during the traditional EastEnders (BBC1) Christmas.

Elsewhere Zoe caught pneumonia, Phil hit the bottle (after hitting his very flimsy-looking fridge, and an even flimsier-looking Mark Fowler), Billy was lonely and Mel told Steve she wanted a divorce. Oh, and Sharon left the Square, but I'm not sure if that's bad news or not.

The only uplifting sight (apart from Lisa) was the superbly-played love match between Dot (June Brown) and Jim (John Bardon), with Jim's surprise engagement ring hidden in a cracker.

If he doesn't win Best Actor at the next Soap Awards, I will.

No unusual presents to speak of, although by Friday Pat was sporting her most interesting earrings yet.

Not wishing to put too fine a point on it they looked like recently removed haemorrhoids.

In light blue.
