Ian Brady starves for five years.

MOORS murderer Ian Brady yesterday became the only known person to survive five years on a starvation diet.

The 66-year-old child killer has been on hunger strike since October 1, 1999, at Ashworth hospital in Maghull.

He has been kept alive by force-feeding at the high security unit.

He started refusing food after a team of nurses moved him to another ward for close observation. In February 2000, a judge ruled that because of his mental illness, Brady was incapable of making rational decisions about his diet.

Earlier this year Brady claimed that he had secretly had crisps and chocolate smuggled into his room.

Last night the Guinness Book of World Records said the hunger strike could be considered a world record but would not include it in future editions.
