IVF AUSTRALIA IS FIRST U.S. IN VITRO ORGANIZATION TO REACH
 1,000-BABY MILESTONE
GREENWICH, Conn., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- IVF Australia announced an American milestone today: they are the first in vitro fertilization (IVF) organization in the United States to achieve the birth of 1,000 babies.
"We are proud to be the first to reach this milestone," said founding director Vicki Baldwin. "These 1,000 babies mean that couples who were diagnosed as infertile are now biological parents."
"A number of this magnitude is important because it emphasizes that in vitro fertilization has come of age in this country and can now be considered a realistic option for infertile couples," said Dr. Robert Barbieri, professor and chairman, department of obstetrics and gynecology, Health Sciences Center, SUNY, Stony Brook, N.Y.
IVF Australia, an American organization, opened its first program in New York in March 1986, bringing to the United States successful medical technologies developed and practiced at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. The relationship enables IVF Australia Programs to remain at the forefront of assisted reproductive technologies, while allowing couples to benefit from clinical applications of major research advances.
IVF Australia Programs provide infertile couples with treatments that address conditions such as non-functioning fallopian tubes, endometriosis, male infertility, immunologic infertility, and premature menopause.
Four IVF Australia Programs are currently in operation: IVF Australia Program at United Hospital in Port Chester, N.Y.; IVF Australia Program - Boston at Waltham-Weston Hospital & Medical Center in Waltham, Mass.; IVF Australia Program - Long Island in Mineola, N.Y.; and Allegheny General Hospital IVF Australia Program in Pittsburgh, Pa. Programs will be established in Detroit and Northern New Jersey in 1992.
