ITT TEVES BUILDING BRAKE MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN BURKE COUNTY

ITT TEVES BUILDING BRAKE MANUFACTURING FACILITY IN BURKE COUNTY
MORGANTON, N.C., March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Teves is establishing a manufacturing plant with an investment of $22-30 million that will initially employ 350 people in Morganton, announced Governor Jim Martin today. Governor Martin joined ITT Teves America President H. Albert Beller and local officials in Morganton to discuss details of the new operation that will manufacture anti-lock brake (ABS) and traction control systems.
"We are indeed honored by ITT Teves' continued belief that North Carolina is the very best place to site a new operation and have it succeed," said Governor Martin. "This is high praise for our state and our people, and it speaks well of the mutually beneficial partnership we've built."
 H. Albert Beller, president, ITT Teves American and general manager, Electronic Brakes and Suspension Systems Group of ITT Teves GmbH, said: "The expansion of our manufacturing capacity was necessitated by an increased demand for ABS from both manufacturers and consumers. The new plant will help ITT Teves meet current and future demand while spurring economic growth in North Carolina."
Construction of the 125,000 square-foot plant will begin immediately on approximately 40 acres at the southeast corner of I-40 and Jamestown Road. Completion is expected in the first quarter of 1993. New employees will receive training for ITT Teves production needs through the state's free skill training program to be administered by Western Piedmont Community College.
Governor Martin commented that in October 1987, ITT Teves chose Asheville and North Carolina for its first manufacturing plant in North America devoted entirely to the ABS product line. Until then, ITT's ABS products were produced in Frankfurt, West Germany. Since opening the Asheville plant as a $30 million, 300 employee, 75,000 square-foot facility in 1989, ITT has expanded it to a $100 million, 750 employee, 172,000 square-foot operation. The Morganton plant will serve as a satellite to the Asheville operation to increase production for domestic and export markets.
"ITT Teves' experience with its successful operation in North Carolina has given us the opportunity to announce the company's second North American manufacturing plant devoted solely to its ABS product line," said Governor Martin. "This is a great example of why our state has been No. 1, leading the nation with the most new manufacturing facilities for 4 of the last 5 years."
"We're proud ITT Teves is expanding its corporate presence in North

Carolina," said Secretary Estell C. Lee, department of Economic and Community Development. "Morganton, the region and the state appreciate all the positive economic activity that will result from this very significant investment, 350 more and better jobs, new business opportunities and the resulting additional revenues for increased civic services."
Chairman Ronnie Thompson, Burke County Board of Commissioners, said: "I think it is great. This high tech industry will add to our diverse manufacturing base. ITT Teves is poised for growth and the citizens of the county and area should benefit for many years into the future."
Wayne Harris, Chairman of the Burke Economic Development Council, said: "The Burke Economic Development Council is extremely pleased to have ITT Teves locate a manufacturing facility in our area. Burke County, the City of Morganton, the Burke Economic Development Council, and the State worked closely together to bring this project here."
Arthur F. Reimers, state developer for the N.C. Department of Economic and Community Development, worked with ITT Teves during its site search for the Asheville facility and since July of 1990 for the second facility. Other state agencies included Joe Sturdivant of Community Colleges and Jack Murdock of NCDOT. Executive Director Tom Johnson and the Burke Economic Development Council coordinated local efforts to win the plant.
Currently, ITT Teves is an ABS supplier to Chrysler Corporation, Ford Motor Company and General Motors Corporation in North America and Europe, and to BMW, Jaguar, Saab, Volvo, Volkswagen, Mazda, Kia Motors, Alfa Romeo, Ferrari, Citroen, Renault, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi.
ITT Teves is a unit of ITT Automotive, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Mich. ITT Automotive, with annual revenues of more than $3 billion, consists of nine divisions with 75 facilities throughout the world. It is a global supplier of components and system-oriented products to the automotive industry.
ITT Automotive's Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning Cheryl Longtin will deliver the Commencement speech for the College of Business at Appalachian State University in May.
