ITT SHERATON LAUNCHES DRIVE FOR ITS EMPLOYEES IN FLORIDA & HAWAII
BOSTON, Sept. 29 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Sheraton Corporation has launched a relief drive to support its employees in hurricane-affected areas of Florida and Hawaii both at corporate and hotel levels.
The drive is being spearheaded by the company's Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, John Kapioltas, who distributed an internal memorandum to Boston-based staff last week and sent a note to all properties in North America yesterday.
"Although federal, state and general organization assistance is being provided to the areas affected by Hurricane Andrew and Iniki, many of our employees want to provide direct assistance to our own ITT Sheraton family members," said Kapioltas.
ITT Sheraton has nine properties in south Florida and 10 in Hawaii, most of which sustained limited damage and are now fully operational, except the three on Kauai (Sheraton Kauai Beach Resort, Sheraton Kauai Garden Hotel and Princeville Hotel) and the Sheraton Key Biscayne Hotel in Florida, which sustained extensive damage and are projected to remain closed through 1992.
"We checked with each affected area to determine what they need most and when, and from that we elected to gather goods and money in Boston while encouraging donations to be sent directly to our designated contacts in each area," Kapioltas said.
The Sheraton Bal Harbour re-opened four days after Hurricane Andrew struck south Florida. The hotel has been extensively involved in the relief effort in south Florida. Bal Harbour's Police Department used the hotel as a command post during the storm. The Florida National Guard was housed in the hotel during the relief effort. The lobby served as a drop-off point for donations since re-opening.
In addition, staff members collected and delivered truckloads of supplies to Homestead Air Force Base, including a special effort for pet and animal food which was delivered to MetroZoo and Parrot Jungle.
The hotel has been supporting the Hurricane Relief Concert program which occurred on Saturday, Sept. 26, by providing rooms and office space for the show, which will air later this fall on Showtime.
ITT Sheraton's Hawaii/Japan Division office in Honolulu organized a local relief effort as soon as Hurricane Iniki struck, collecting and distributing supplies and other items to assist people in Kauai.
Boston-based ITT Sheraton Corporation, a subsidiary of ITT Corporation, is a worldwide network of 430 owned, leased, managed and franchised properties, including 295 upscale and luxury hotels, resorts and all-suites and 135 inns in 61 countries.
