ITT SHERATON CORPORATION EXTENDS SEGMENTATION BY PREMIERING THE ITT SHERATON LUXURY COLLECTION

BOSTON, Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Sheraton Corporation continues to segment its distinctive property types by premiering its most exclusive hotels and resorts, The ITT Sheraton Luxury Collection, which represents some of the world's finest: 28 ITT Sheraton Hotels and Resorts and 33 Sheraton Towers in 32 countries.
"We are delighted to present a collection of some of the world's most distinctive and distinguished hotels and resorts and our Towers product, The ITT Sheraton Luxury Collection," said John Kapioltas, chairman and chief executive officer, ITT Sheraton Corporation.
The emphasis is positioning the ITT Sheraton Luxury Collection as a group of world class hotels and resorts catering to the most discriminating corporate and leisure travelers, established as a network in major gateway cities and resort destinations worldwide.
"The Luxury Collection with The St. Regis as its flagship provides ITT Sheraton with an opportunity to create a sustainable competitive advantage, especially in segmenting and communicating with upscale individual travelers," Kapioltas said.
ITT Sheraton's Luxury Collection consists of 28 hotels and resorts and 33 Sheraton Towers, the company's "hotel within a hotel" concept that includes separate registration and lounges, personalized butler service and other amenities.
"The member list represents the pinnacle of hotel and resort properties that ITT Sheraton has to offer around the world, many already recognized as world-class leaders in luxury," Kapioltas said.
"I believe we are unique in overcoming what is becoming increasingly cost-prohibitive and logistically impossible for small chains and independent luxury hotels to compete for the global customer base necessary to sustain a luxury product in major international destinations," he added.
Kapioltas said that The ITT Sheraton Luxury Collection member hotels and resorts, although distinguished as a group, are each distinctive in its individual type of luxury offering.
Among Luxury Collection member properties that Kapioltas cited this week at a New York media briefing are The St. Regis in New York, which completed a magnificent restoration and renovation in 1991, and The Prince de Galles in Paris, which ITT Sheraton acquired from Marriott Corporation in August 1992 and which is undergoing an extensive renovation to be completed in spring 1994.
Other Luxury Collection members include The Carlton in Washington, D.C.; The Royal Hawaiian in Waikiki; Sheraton Palace in San Francisco; Sheraton Salzburg; Sheraton Mofarrej in Sao Paulo; Sheraton Algrave in Portugal; Sheraton Jeddah in Saudi Arabia; Royal Orchid Sheraton in Bangkok, Thailand; Hotel Hana Maui; Sheraton Mirage Port Douglas and Sheraton Mirage Gold Coast, both in Queensland, Australia; Princeville Hotel in Kauai; Sheraton Park Tower in London; Sheraton Sofia Balkan in Sofia, Bulgaria and Sheraton Towers Southgate in Melbourne, Australia which opened in June 1992.
"The Luxury Collection is distinguished by its roster of members, each attaining the highest regard within the industry and throughout its distinctive clientele," said Rick Segal, ITT Sheraton vice president, director of operations, Luxury Hotels and general manager, The St. Regis.
ITT Sheraton is expanding the Luxury Collection through acquisition, leasing and management contracts and is supported by a dedicated and targeted marketing and advertising program. The ITT Sheraton Luxury Collection brochure, which profiles photographs and descriptions of member properties, also supports the Luxury Collection's efforts.
Boston-based ITT Sheraton Corporation, a subsidiary of ITT Corporation (NYSE: ITT), is a worldwide network of more than 400 owned, leased, managed and franchised properties in 61 countries, including 293 upscale and luxury hotels, resorts and all-suites and 114 mid-priced inns.
