ITT Industries Wins Night Vision Contract from U.S. Navy Equipment to Contain Latest Generation 4 Technology.

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Aug. 17 /PRNewswire/ --

ITT Industries, Inc. (NYSE: IIN) announced today that its Night Vision Division received 100% of a competitive contract awarded by the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) in Patuxent River, MD. Under this contract, ITT will produce and deliver 2252 AN/AVS-9 Night Vision Image Intensifier Sets -- equipped with the latest Generation (Gen) 4 image intensifier technology -- over the next year. Total value of this multiyear contract, including all options, is $43 Million, with a first-year base contract valued at $13.1 Million. Contract deliveries will begin in early 2001.

This procurement follows a $19.8 Million (base plus options) contract, which the Navy awarded ITT in 1997 for Gen 3 AN/AVS-9 systems. The 1997 contract is scheduled for completion in early 2001.

"The NAVAIR contract represents a critical milestone for both ITT and the Navy," said Neil Gallagher, President & General Manager for the Night Vision Division. "It is the Navy's largest-ever procurement of aviation night vision goggles and our first major contract for Gen 4 technology. This award reflects the confidence of the U.S. Navy in ITT's ability to supply aviators with the most reliable, highest-performance night vision equipment available in the industry."

The AN/AVS-9 Image Intensifier Set was first developed by ITT in 1992 as the "F4949 Aviator Night Vision System," designed specifically to meet the requirements of active and reserve aviators. Since then, it has evolved into a number of system variants to meet a wider range of customer needs. Now designated by the U.S. Government as the "AN/AVS-9," this system is available in several configurations that allow use with different helmets for both fixed-wing and rotary-wing applications. The AN/AVS-9 systems procured under the new contract will be used primarily in U.S. Navy and Marine Corps helicopters.

The image intensifier tube is the heart of every night vision system, including goggles, pocket scopes, and weapon sights. Image intensifier tube technology has evolved through multiple "generations," beginning with Gen 0 in the early sixties. Since the mid-eighties, ITT has led the night vision industry in the advancement of Gen 3 technology. Recent technology advancements have resulted in the establishment of a fourth generation of image intensifier technology, now being implemented by the U.S. military.

The Night Vision Division of ITT Industries is the world's leading producer and supplier of Generation 3 night vision devices for U.S. and allied military forces. The company also provides products for law enforcement and other commercial/consumer customers.
