ITT AUTOMOTIVE INTRODUCES MK20 ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM AT THE 1993 SAE WORLD CONGRESS & EXPOSITION

AUBURN HILLS, Mich., March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- ITT Automotive, No. 1 in four-wheel anti-lock brakes and traction-control systems, will introduce its latest ABS innovation, the MK20 system, at the 1993 SAE World Congress & Exposition.
The MK20, based on ITT Automotive's MKIV-Gi ABS technology, is one of the lightest, most compact and cost effective ABS systems in the industry, featuring a modular concept for the highest component standardization. Series production of the MK20 is scheduled for the mid-1990s.
"The growing popularity of ABS among car-buying segments, spreading beyond the luxury car market, has created increased OEM demand for ABS technology. Application capabilities are now required for a broad range of automobiles," said Thomas V. Chambers, general manager, ITT Automotive North American Brake Systems. "ITT Automotive has developed the MK20 to help meet this market demand.
"The MK20's lightweight, compact design will enable ITT Automotive to meet market requirements in North America, Europe, Japan, the Far East and other parts of the world. It's a concept we call 'World ABS,'" said Chambers.
The integrated MK20 has an optimized weight of 3 kilograms and an optimized size of 100mm by 130mm by 160mm. It also features a more efficient pump design, and incorporates ITT Automotive's proven valve design concept.
The system can accommodate all brake circuit and drive concepts for mass-produced automobiles and light trucks including front, rear or four-wheel drive. The MK20's modular design allows for the addition of traction-control.
In addition, the MK20 features an integrated modular design which allows for separate manufacturing of the electric motor, hydraulic pump and valves, and electronic module. The standardized module c?ept reduces the need for a variety of ABS types while significantly lowering cost. The design also meets recycling requirements.
Milestone Technology Based on the MKIV-Gi
The MK20 is based on milestone technology initially introduced on the MKIV-Gi. With both systems, electronic and hydraulic control elements are combined into an extremely compact unit -- a concept called "hydronic."
The hydronic concept is made possible by the integration of a new valve block that allows the solenoids to be separated from the mechanical components of the valves and integrated in the electronic controller. This design reduces the number of connections normally required.
The MK20 further extends the electronic safety concept through "asymmetric redundancy" which ensures the redundant processing of all important signals.
 ITT Automotive's Electronic Brake-Force Distribution
The MK20, which offers the same level of high performance as the MKIV-Gi, has extended capabilities to integrate traction-control and ITT Automotive's electronic brake-force distribution (EBD).
EBD uses the wheel slip signals, even during normal braking, to modify brake pressure for optimum brake-force distribution, even below the locking threshold.
The components required for the EBD operation are all contained in the ABS system. By using EBD software, the braking balance can be modified based on vehicle parameters and road conditions at the time.
The system's sophisticated control technology recognizes any tendency for overbraking early enough to safely compensate for it. Additionally, the system adapts to brake-force distribution over the entire life of the vehicle, maximizes deceleration capability and assures optimal brake balance before entering the ABS mode. This allows vehicle manufacturers to eliminate proportioning valves with improved control benefits.
ITT Automotive is a $3.5 billion automotive supplier of components and system-oriented products to the automotive industry, including anti- lock brake, traction-control and total brake systems, fluid-handling, seat structures, electrical motors, switches and lamps, precision die casting and aftermarket products.
