ITT AUTOMOTIVE DETROIT GRAND PRIX HAS NEW PROMOTER; 13TH ANNUAL RACE SET TO RUN ON BELLE ISLE PARK JUNE 10-12, 1994

DETROIT, Aug. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Detroit Renaissance Grand Prix, Inc., promoter of the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix since its inception, announced today International Management Group (IMG) will take over as promoter of the annual IndyCar race on Belle Isle Park near downtown Detroit.
"We have run this race for 12 years as a non-profit organization," stated Alfred R. Glancy III, chairman of Detroit Renaissance. "There are other areas that we want to concentrate on regarding Detroit's revitalization and with a company like IMG interested in running the race, we felt the time was right to turn it over."
IMG, founded by Mark H. McCormack in 1960, is the largest sports management and marketing company in the world. The Cleveland-based firm has been involved in motorsports for more than 20 years.
After the IMG deal was solidified, Detroit Mayor Coleman A. Young commented, "Detroit is fortunate to have a firm with the international experience of IMG taking over as the promoter of the Detroit Grand Prix.
"It began 12 years ago as a dream of many, particularly the late Henry Ford II, who saw it as a unique opportunity for the automotive capital of the world to market ourselves to the world," stated Young. "In the intervening 12 years, it has fulfilled those expectations under the steady leadership of Bob McCabe. With IMG taking over, we are assured that the Grand Prix will continue in very capable hands."
McCabe, who recently retired from Detroit Renaissance, will join the Grand Prix's new promoter as vice president of civic & government affairs. McCabe will also join a two-man Grand Prix Transition Team that includes Bennett E. Bidwell, retired chairman of Chrysler Motors.
Bidwell commented, "I have been associated with IMG for 23 years. I have a tremendous amount of respect for what they have accomplished during that time and I am excited that they are coming to Detroit."
Bud Stanner, president of the new Grand Prix organization and senior vice president of IMG, confirmed that IMG will be opening an office in Detroit. The multi-national corporation currently has 62 offices in 21 countries.
Stanner said that his firm was extremely excited about acquiring the rights to the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix. "It was an easy decision for us. Detroit is a wonderful city and one that has always taken pride in its sporting events -- and the fact that this area is the automotive capital of the world means that we must go the extra mile to make this event one of the best on the IndyCar schedule."
Timothy D. Leuliette, president and CEO of ITT Automotive -- the Grand Prix's title sponsor, re-confirmed his company's commitment to the event. "We wish IMG all the best with their acquisition of the Detroit Grand Prix. We intend to work closely with IMG, as we did with the previous race promoter, to make this a successful event for the City of Detroit, all of the sponsors and the general public."
William Stokkan, chairman and chief executive officer of the Bloomfield Hills-based Championship Auto Racing Teams (IndyCar), the organization that governs the event, added his support. "It is very important to IndyCar racing to make sure that the Detroit Race -- which is the home race to many of our automotive sponsors -- continues to be an event of the highest stature and caliber. We believe IMG, with a proven record of success in promoting IndyCar races and other sporting events, will help the ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix grow bigger and better."
The 1994 ITT Automotive Detroit Grand Prix is set for June 10-12 on the grounds of Belle Isle Park. The race is a part of the PPG IndyCar World Series -- a 16-race series that also features the Indianapolis 500.
