ITRON ANNOUNCES AMR PROJECT IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

SPOKANE, Wash., Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Itron (NASDAQ: ITRI), a leading supplier of data acquisition and communications products for electric, gas and water utilities worldwide, announced today that it has signed a $1 million research and development agreement with Southern Electric and Scottish Power, of the United Kingdom, to develop an Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) application using power line carrier technology. The project builds upon Itron's existing power line carrier product offering: an Integrated Circuit Spread Spectrum chip set that was jointly developed by Itron, National Semiconductor and Cyplex.
"We consider this agreement a vote of confidence in Itron's technology and in its ability to help U.K. utilities stay competitive as they face market de-regulation in 1998," said Itron President Johnny Humphreys. "And there's no doubt that it strengthens Itron's AMR presence internationally."
The demonstration project calls for 1,000 electric meters in central southern England and southern Scotland to be adapted so that they can be read remotely using power line carrier technology. The system will improve customer service by eliminating the need for utility personnel to gain access to homes for meter reading. In addition, AMR improves the information available about customers' electricity use and virtually eliminates estimated bills.
Once adapted, the meters will be able to send meter readings on command and with complete accuracy, along power distribution lines, day or night. Readings can then be sent via radio network, satellites or telephone links to computers at the utilities' headquarters. The project is designed to show that meter readings can be transferred across the country and between companies, making it easier for U.K. electricity suppliers to compete with each other when the market is de-regulated in 1998.
Itron is a full-service supplier of portable and networked data collection systems installed at more than 1,100 electric, gas and water utilities worldwide. Founded in 1977, the company currently employs approximately 600 people and is headquartered in Spokane. Itron has manufacturing facilities in Spokane and Waseca, Minn., as well as subsidiaries in the United Kingdom, France and Australia.
