FLIPPIN' heck! This vessel may look like it's in trouble - but there's no need to abandon ship.

In fact, this Floating Instrument Platform (FLIP) is the only vessel in the world that can operate both horizontally and vertically at sea, to make it easier to study the ocean. The ship is the creation of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California.

The insides, including the crew quarters, are designed in such a way that they can be used whatever position the ship is in. Probably best not to be in the bathroom when it flips, though...
