IT'S STEREOS v FURRIES; Battle of bands at WRITS.

Byline: SUE CASTLE

STEREOPHONICS are squaring up to the Super Furry Animals in the fight to be the Welsh band of 2001.

The Welsh groups, led by Kelly Jones and Gruff Rhys, are lined up for four awards apiece in the first WRITS ceremony to celebrate Welsh music.

Catatonia, Feeder, The Alarm and Manic Street Preachers are also up for honours.

Stereophonics and the Furries are battling for the best live act award alongside pop legend Tom Jones.

Tom is also going for best male solo artist in the Welsh version of the famous BRITS music industry awards.

Cwmaman's Stereos will also come head to head with the Furries in the best group category, and the best single and best album awards.

Welsh weathergirl Sian Lloyd, who announced yesterday's nominations at the Cardiff Hilton, said: "As somebody who's Welsh and fanatical about Welsh music I would say it's about time we had the WRITS."

The winners will be announced at the Cardiff International Arena on November 27.
