IT'LL END IN TIERS; WEDDING CAKE FIRMS GO TO WAR Cheeky rival park their discount van outside liquidation-hit shop.

Byline: Chris Clements

A WEDDING cake war has erupted between two rival firms.

Designer Cakes by Paige tried to win business from failing Top Tier Cakes by parking a van outside their shop.

That infuriated staff who faced losing their jobs after Top Tier went into liquidation.

They yesterday branded Designer Cakes by Paige "vultures".

One staff member said: "We all think it's quite rude. The van was parked outside the shop for two days before we had even closed.

"They also announced on their Facebook site that Top Tier was closing and customers left over could go to them." Top Tier went into liquidation after 25 years in business.

Fifteen jobs are expected to go although the owners have vowed to honour existing orders.

Designer Cakes by Paige's delivery van outside the shop in Hyndland, Glasgow, carried a sign offering 10 per cent discount on all cakes.

Top Tier staff slapped a picture of a vulture on the van before the shop closed their doors for the last time on Friday.

Top Tier owner Mark Bradford described the move as "cynical opportunism". He said: "I can well understand the reaction of the staff who have been annoyed and angered by what they see as cynical opportunism."

Brian Spear, whose wife Lesley owns Designer Cakes by Paige in the city's Maryhill Road, was behind the stunt.

He said: "We've had a few people on the phone saying Top Tier have stopped taking orders and they need something from us.

"The business is there to be taken. Is that not everybody's position in this environment? "If Top Tier had had the courtesy and decency to tell the public about their troubles, then I wouldn't be sending my van down to sit outside their shop.

"There are about 10 cake shops across Glasgow who have no idea they are closing. If they knew, the street would be full of cake vans.

"If they think I'm a vulture for putting my van outside the shop, I find this seriously offensive.

He added: "It's a very bitchy industry."

Accountancy firm Campbell Dallas have been appointed liquidators of Top Tier, who have shops in Hyndland Road and Bell Street, and a bakery in Elderpark.

Bradford, who took over the business last year, said staff were working to fulfil orders for the next two weeks.

He said around 100 other advance orders will be taken on by other companies.

He added: "We are very grateful to customers for their loyal support for the past 25 years. Despite our efforts we have been unable to turn business around.

"There has been strong interest and I remain hopeful a deal can be done with the liquidator."
