IST rolls out modern composite material technology.

Byline: STAFF REPORT

ISLAMABAD -- The Institute of Space Technology (IST) has introduced the latest and cost effective technology in composite manufacturing for quality engineering products, which is a good addition to engineering solutions to the modern time's challenges.

As part of such efforts, the Institute has recently held in Islamabad an international workshop in collaboration with PUM, Netherlands, to demonstrate as well as identify the affordable options for composite materials manufacturing.

These materials are based on Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding (VARTM), Liquid Resin Infusion (LRI) and Sheet Molding Compound (SMC).

As many as 23 presentations were made during the workshop by the subject specialists from Netherland, Canada, US, France and Pakistan.

The workshop consisted of oral and video presentations, webinar and practical demonstrations about the latest state of the art in VARTM, LRI and SMC technologies for developing structural component.

The engineers, scientists and managers working in the fields of Mechanical, Automotive, Civil, Sports goods and General Engineering industries gained hands on practical experience.

Engineer Van Voorst Bastiaan, a senior member of PUM, covered the vacuum assisted processes such as VARTM and LRI, both theoretically and practically. Prof. Pascal Casari, Nintes University, France, and Prof. Curran Crawford, Victoria University, Canada, delivered video presentations about the latest state of the art in composites design-for-manufacturing with practical applications in windmill blades.
