ISRAEL - June 13 - Most Israelis Oppose Sharon's Assassination Policy.

The centre-left Yedioth Ahronoth daily newspaper says its poll shows that 58% of Israelis believe the extra-judicial killing of Palestinian militants should stop at least temporarily to give Palestinian PM Mahmoud Abbas a chance. The newspaper says: "Trapped in the vice of war, in the past the public tended to support any means against terror that the security establishment proposed and executed. No more. The joy over the assassination of [another] senior Hamas operative has given way to deep anxiety over the results of the action". (The poll was conducted after a particularly bloody few days in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict during which 38 people died - see Arabs-Israel. A suicide bombing in Jerusalem killed 17, while Israel launched strikes against militants in the Gaza Strip that also brought civilian deaths).
