ISL SIGNS EXCLUSIVE AGREEMENT WITH THE KOWA GROUP TO DISTRIBUTE ISL OPHTHALMIC LASER SYSTEMS IN JAPAN

SAN DIEGO, June 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Intelligent Surgical Lasers Inc. (NASDAQ: ISLS) (ISL) today announced the signing of an exclusive distribution agreement with the Electronics and Optics division of the Kowa Group of Japan. The agreement provides Kowa with the exclusive rights in Japan to sell ISL's Model 2001 ophthalmic laser system for therapeutic surgeries and the new Eye Laser System for refractive surgeries. The Model 2001 will be used to perform an outpatient treatment for glaucoma (internal sclerostomy), a less invasive procedure for cataract removal (cataract liquification) and the treatment of vitreous bands (laser vitreolysis). The Model 2001 is the only laser system in the world that can perform these novel therapeutic surgeries.
Kowa has purchased three Model 2001 systems which will be installed in late June. Kowa, a significant presence in ophthalmic instrument development and distribution worldwide, provides ISL with access to the large and growing Japanese market, according to Heinz R. Gisel, chairman and chief executive officer of ISL.
"We are pleased to be working with Kowa, a well-respected company in Japan and throughout the world," Gisel said. "Kowa initially sent Japanese ophthalmologists to the U.S. to conduct clinical trials with our systems. The company was impressed with the data these doctors obtained using the Model 2001 and the Eye Laser. As a result, Kowa sought an agreement with us to distribute the Model 2001 in Japan. It is particularly gratifying that this agreement is based on Kowa's recognition that our proprietary laser technology represents a significant step forward in the development of ophthalmic therapies."
In February, ISL announced a new therapeutic application for the Eye Laser based on preclinical trials conducted by Konsaku Miyake, M.D., of the Miyake Eye Institute in Nagoya, Japan. Dr. Shiggeru Kinoshita, M.D., from Kyoto Perfectual University of Medicine, Kyoto, Japan, is conducting preclinical trials with the Model 2001.
Over the next year, Kowa and its clinicians will oversee the clinical trials needed to gain regulatory approval for sale and marketing of the Model 2001 in Japan. There is also the potential for co-development projects between the two companies, merging Kowa's expertise in optics and electronics with ISL's proprietary laser technology.
"We now have a marketing presence in Japan as well as in the U.S. and Europe," Gisel said. "The large ophthalmic system market in Japan expands our potential marketbase and provides the opportunity to obtain revenue in the next few years."
The Electronics and Optics division of the Kowa Group is focused on the development, manufacture and sale of optical, industrial and medical equipment. The Kowa Group was founded in 1894 as a wholesaler of cotton cloth and has since expanded beyond textiles into electronics, optics and pharmaceuticals.
Intelligent Surgical Lasers Inc. is a development-stage company which designs and manufactures innovative, technologically advanced laser systems for the treatment of a broad range of ophthalmic disorders. Many of these disorders are difficult or impossible to treat with current lasers or traditional medical instruments. Founded in 1987, ISL completed a public offering in September 1992.
