ISDN-BASED VISUAL COMMUNICATION TRIAL TO GIVE TELEPHONE CUSTOMERS AN EYEFUL

 ISDN-BASED VISUAL COMMUNICATION TRIAL
TO GIVE TELEPHONE CUSTOMERS AN EYEFUL
ARLINGTON, Va., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Princeton and Denver residents will soon see eye-to-eye -- thanks to the first residential inter-region technical trial of ISDN-based video service.
In the trial, which will involve Bell Atlantic, U S WEST and AT&T, selected customers of New Jersey Bell, a Bell Atlantic company, will use prototype equipment to converse face-to-face with friends and loved ones served by U S WEST in the Denver or Phoenix area. The prototype equipment and long distance service for the trial will be provided by AT&T; New Jersey Bell and U S WEST companies will provide local telephone service. The trial is slated to begin in late November and continue until next summer.
At its peak, the trial will give up to 200 customers (100 each from New Jersey Bell and U S WEST companies) the chance to try one of the likely services of the information age: seeing the person with whom they are talking on the phone.
The concept of visual communication has been around for many years. What may hasten consumer acceptance now is the deployment of Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) technology.
ISDN, which renders ordinary telephone wires capable of transmitting not only voice but video and data signals, will soon be available to many residential telephone customers. Bell Atlantic, the most aggressive of the regional Bell companies in deploying ISDN, plans to begin filing tariffs for residential ISDN during the second half of 1993. By late 1994, Bell Atlantic plans to make ISDN available to nearly 90 percent of its customers in the mid-Atlantic region.
"Widespread deployment of ISDN in the United States will transform the way people work in this country," said John Seazholtz, Bell Atlantic vice president of network technology. "In just a few years, small business people and people at home will be able to network computers, establish video conferences and send photo quality images through the same telephone lines they use today to make calls."
The 200 customers in the technical trial will be among the first residential customers to get a direct taste of how ISDN can serve them. Trial participants will receive prototype ISDN equipment from AT&T. The video service permits the transmission of two-way, full- motion color video images and sound over local and long-distance lines. For example, grandchildren can gather together to wish their grandmother a happy birthday and telecommuters can conduct business "face-to-face" with their co-workers at the office via ISDN based video service.
Bell Atlantic Corporation (NYSE: BEL), based in Philadelphia, is the parent of New Jersey Bell, Bell of Pennsylvania, Diamond State Telephone (Delaware) and the Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Companies serving Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Bell Atlantic is also the parent of companies that provide wireless communications in the mid-Atlantic region and business systems and services for customer-based information technology, including software, systems integration, hardware and software service and support and financial services, throughout the United States and internationally.
In addition, Bell Atlantic International offers network services and consulting to telephone authorities throughout the world and, in conjunction with Ameritech, owns a majority interest in Telecom Corporation of New Zealand.
U S WEST Communications, the largest subsidiary of U S WEST, Inc. (NYSE: USW), provides telecommunications services and data solutions to 25 million business and residential customers in 14 western and midwestern states.
