IRVINE SENSORS OFFERS SYNOPSIS OF REMARKS AT THE CRUTTENDEN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA GROWTH STOCK CONFERENCE

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a summary of a presentation made by Costa Mesa, Calif.-based Irvine Sensors today at the Cruttenden Southern California Growth Stock Conference.
Irvine Sensors Corp. stacks integrated circuits into the world's most compact electronics packages. Developed originally for ballistic missile detection from space, this technology is the key to entry into the worldwide packaged semiconductor business, a $100 billion annual market. 1992 was the breakthrough year positioning the company for this extraordinary business opportunity, and 1993 will be the year in which the manufacturing resources will be put in place to seize the opportunity.
The greatest breakthrough of 1992 occurred in June when, culminating a three-year working relationship, Irvine Sensors, on a non-exclusive basis, licensed IBM to make chip-stacks containing 10 to 100 chips for use in its computers and other products. IBM will also sell chip stacks to other high-volume users including direct competitors and computer manufacturers who design their own systems but buy their packaged parts from third parties. At one stroke, then, the IBM agreement gives Irvine Sensors the means to attack the largest segments of that $100 billion markets.
Additionally in 1992, a process breakthrough allowed Irvine Sensors to demonstrate a product called the Memory Short Stack(TM). Memory Short Stacks contain up to 10 stacked computer memory chips and fit in the space that a single chip presently occupies. This product offers an immediate and evolutionary way for users to realize many of the benefits of chip-stacking in their current designs.
To service low-volume, high-margin customers, Irvine Sensors raised $2.7 million in a July public offering to improve its existing facilities. These improvements are currently underway and are expected to be completed during the summer of 1993. To deal with additional demand, in December the company licensed IBM to use Memory Short Stacks in its own products and to act as a supplier to Irvine Sensors. IBM expects to ship Memory Short Stacks to Irvine Sensors in 1993 and full stacks internally within IBM in 1994.
With the first commercial shipments occurring in the second half of 1993 and a resumption of increases in government business, Irvine Sensors believes that its financial performance will sharply improve in the fourth quarter leading to sustained operational profitability in 1994. Within two years of IBM reaching full-volume production, royalties flowing from the non-exclusive IBM relationship alone could reach dollars per share for Irvine Sensors shareholders.
