IRT ADDS NEW SERVICE FOR SPECIAL GEMSTONE COLORIZATION PROCESS
 Dark Blue Topaz Colorization Available
Through Agreement with University of Virginia
SAN DIEGO, Aug. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- IRT Corp. (AMEX: IX) today announced a new radiation processing service for topaz gemstones that provides a deep blue color of topaz, in addition to the range of colorization shades IRT offered previously. One of the steps in this new, proprietary service is neutron irradiation, which will be provided to IRT by the University of Virginia Reactor Facility under an exclusive agreement signed in July.
Neutron irradiation can also be used alone to provide other shades of blue for topaz, which in its natural state is colorless. IRT will offer all of these colorization services to gem merchants.
"The agreement with the University of Virginia is the final, necessary component for IRT's proprietary process to create a desirable, dark blue topaz," said Terry Deane, senior vice president and general manager of Radiation Processing. "It allows IRT to increase its offerings of different shades of blue topaz and complements several unique processes we've developed. Our scientific staff will also work with the Virginia staff to develop new colorization techniques, supporting our long-range plans to expand IRT's radiation processing business."
More than 20 years ago, IRT's Radiation Processing operation pioneered the use of electron-beam irradiation in topaz colorization to produce what is known as Sky Blue topaz. The new process produces a deeper, more brilliant blue color, known as Swiss Blue.
IRT, a world leader in high-energy electron-beam radiation processing, is licensed by the State of California and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, and is authorized to test and release irradiated topaz. In addition to gemstone colorization, IRT's Radiation Processing services are used to sterilize disposable medical components, increase the strength and temperature resistance of plastics through polymer cross-linking, alter the switching speeds of semiconductor devices, test the radiation-hardness of electronic components and conduct activation analysis.
IRT Corp. makes computerized X-ray machine-vision systems used for manufacturing inspection and security and offers radiation processing services for commercial applications. Company headquarters are in San Diego.
