IRT'S PERSONNEL SCANNER RECEIVES PATENT; COMPANY SEES NEW MARKETING OPPORTUNITY

SAN DIEGO, Calif., Feb. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- IRT Corporation (AMEX: IX) announced today that it has been issued a patent for its X-ray Backscatter Detection System, SECURE 1000 (TM) personnel scanner, by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
The significance of the patent is the recognition of IRT's major advancement in technology which permits the safe and effective use of reflected energy to screen for concealed objects on a person's body. The SECURE 1000, within seconds, detects metallic and non-metallic objects such as weapons, plastic explosives and narcotics thus eliminating the need for time-consuming, labor-intensive body searches.
"This is a major event which gives IRT an exclusive role in pursuing a large potential market for backscatter screening applications," said Peter W. Sognefest, IRT's president and CEO. "There is a rapidly emerging market for security equipment to detect weapons, explosive materials and devices, drugs and other contraband which industry sources predict will reach a multi-billion dollar level during this decade."
Near-term sales targets include screening of visitors to correctional facilities and nuclear installations as well as employees of precious metal processors and Department of Energy installations. Along those lines, earlier this month, IRT received its initial order for four SECURE 1000 personnel scanners from the Mexican government for use in federal penitentiaries.
IRT's state-of-the-art X-ray systems and radiation services serve three growing markets:
-- Manufacturing Inspection (automated process control and quality assurance inspection for miniaturized integrated circuits and circuit board assemblies, and airbag components)
-- Radiation Processing (principally medical products sterilization, gemstone colorization and semiconductor enhancement)
-- Security Systems (personnel scanners which detect metallic and non-metallic objects; i.e., plastic explosives, weapons and drugs)
Major customers include Delco Electronics (General Motors), Fujitsu, Hitachi, IBM, Eli Lilly, Northern Telecom and Siemens.
