IRS wants more 1099s filed electronically.

The IRS is pushing to have more payer file information returns (forms 1098, 1099, 5498 and W-2G) electronically. Such information returns are filed electronically via the IRS's Information Reporting Program-Bulletin Board System (IRP-BBS). IRP-BBS provides users with access to electronic filing and other common electronic bulletin board services. It makes available forms and publications, provides news on information-return filing and allows users to leave questions and messages on the bulletin board.

The IRP-BBS can be reached via modem at (304) 263-2749. Phone lines are open 24 hours a day, except for maintenance time. Information about the IRP-BBS program and requirements for software and modems are provided in IRS publicationb 1527. To request this publication, call (304) 263-8700 between 8:30 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. eastern standard time. This number also can be used to ask questions about electronic filing.

The IRP-BBS program has been in existence since November 1990. So far this year, about 7 million information returns were filed electronically.
