IRS LOWERING TAX BURDEN THROUGH SYSTEM REDESIGN

 DALLAS, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- The Internal Revenue Service processes over 200 million tax returns, one billion information returns and collects over $1 trillion each year using technology developed in the 1950's and 1960's. It is no secret that IRS workers and the taxpayers they serve are bearing more of the burden to make sure that the system keeps operating.
 To make tax filing and processing easier and more efficient, the IRS is redesigning its information systems using 1990s' technology. Projects include:
 -- Tele-file, a system being tested this year allowing some Ohio taxpayers to file their returns using nothing more than a touch-tone phone;
 -- 1040PC, a computer-generated answer sheet containing information from the tax form; and
 -- Electronic filing, where 11 million taxpayers transmitted their tax returns directly to the IRS's computers.
 Some benefits of tax system modernization are eliminating 7 million unnecessary contacts with taxpayers each year, reducing case processing time by 25 percent or more, assuring that 95 percent of all taxpayer contacts are resolved with a single phone call, and in the case of electronic filing, eliminating 70-90 percent of all processing errors.
