IRS HOLDS SPECIAL ASSISTANCE WEEK FOR
 NONFILERS OF EMPLOYEE PENSION PLANS
FAILING TO FILE IS NO SOLUTION TO TAX PROBLEMS
DENVER, July 19 /PRNewswire/ -- IRS wants to help nonfilers settle their tax problems said IRS District Director Gerald Swanson. Beginning Monday, July 27, 1992, a special assistance week for nonfilers will be held at selected offices. According to Swanson, "Our goal is to assist taxpayers in resolving their tax matters without fear." However, Swanson stressed; "THIS IS NOT AN AMNESTY PROGRAM."
Annual information returns required of employer sponsors of qualified pension and profit plans, Forms 5500, 5500C/R and 5500EZ, may be filed during Special Assistance Week for Nonfilers. An IRS Employee Plans Specialist will be on hand to assist employers in filing these returns. Delinquent Forms 990T for reporting unrelated taxable income of qualified pension or profit sharing trusts may also be filed at this time. Delinquent Forms 5330, Return of Excise Taxes Related to Employee Benefit Plans, used to report taxes on failure to meet minimum funding standards, excess contributions to qualified plans and prohibited transactions may also be filed as part of this program.
"Failing to file a Federal tax return in no solution to your tax problems," said Swanson. If a taxpayer voluntarily files delinquent returns without prior contact by the IRS, criminal tax charges are not normally pursued.
This assistance will only be available in the IRS Headquarters Office; 600 17th Street, Denver, from 8:00am - 4:30pm. For additional information or assistance call IRS Taxpayer Service at 825-7041 for the Denver Metro Area, or 1-800-829-1040 elsewhere in Colorado.
