IRISH GOVERNMENT APPROVES INCENTIVE PLAN FOR EXPANSION OF APC'S EUROPEAN OPERATIONS

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., June 4 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (APC) (NASDAQ: APCC) today announced that the Irish Government approved a proposal for financial and tax incentives that encourages APC to establish a production and technical support center in Galway, Ireland.
Under the proposal, APC would occupy 260,000-square-feet of an existing facility in Galway, details of which are subject to current discussions. The building is presently occupied by a major computer manufacturer. This portion of the plant is being closed as the present occupant rationalizes its worldwide production facilities.
According to Rodger B. Dowdell, president, chairman and CEO of APC, the company currently expects to fund such an expansion out of cash flow, and will receive substantial IDA support in the first phase development of the facility, in addition to longer term incentives.
Dowdell said the company continues to search for sites to expand its North American manufacturing operations as well.
The IDA has been in discussion with APC since 1989. Dowdell said the availability of a qualified workforce, and the immediate availability of a large modern factory building, as well as other financial and tax incentives, make the proposal from Ireland very attractive for APC.
"The establishment of an operation in Ireland will enable us to better serve our European customers from both a service and manufacturing standpoint," said Dowdell.
Negotiations between APC and the Irish government are in the final stages pending approval.
Barring any unforeseen difficulties, Dowdell anticipates beginning APC operations in Galway sometime late this summer.
