EQUINOCTIAL MAGIC

Twice yearly display

THIS Thursday is the Autumn Equinox (also known as Mabon and the Harvest festival), one of the quarter days of the year, a Lesser Festival celebrated by witches, pagans and many others who follow a spiritual path.

An equinox is an astronomical point that occurs when the sun crosses the equator on its journey, and we experience a day and a night that are of equal length.

Up until now, the hours of daylight have been greater than the hours from dusk to dawn. But from now on, the nights grow longer and days are shorter.

This is an excellent time for making wine and gathering dried herbs, plants and seeds. To honour your loved ones in the Spirit world, place grapes, leaves, acorns, and pine cones on the grave or memorial.

SYMBOLS OF MABON: Wine, pine cones, acorns, grains, corn, apples, pomegranates, vines, ivy, dried seeds nuts and grains.

HERBS, INCENSE, PERFUMES AND FLOWERS: Ferns, honeysuckle, marigold, myrrh, passionflower, rose, sage, solomon's seal and thistles.

FOODS: Breads, nuts, apples, pomegranates, and root vegetables.

COLOURS: Red, orange, maroon, brown, and gold.

GEMSTONES: Sapphire, lapis lazuli, and yellow agates.

And I wish you all a merry Mabon.

AT LAST.. A LITTLE BALANCE AS LIBRA COMES TO ASCENDANCY

FRIDAY sees the sun enter the sign of Libra, the Balance.

Librans enjoy using their artistic talents and usually enjoy the company of artistic, creative or musical people.

They tend to lack self-confidence but should never hide or bury their talents.

Ruled by the love planet Venus, Libra is renowned as the Zodiac Lover. Librans enjoy and feel good being in a loving relationship, but they can be outrageous flirts.

If you are looking for love and enjoy being romanced by a sincere, thoughtful and usually very attractive lover, find yourself a Libran.

Libra is also known for being the Zodiac diplomat, negotiator and peacemaker as they need harmony and peace of mind.

They pride themselves on being impartial and try hard to make fair and just decisions.

Unfortunately this need to know all of the facts can indefinitely delay Libra's ability to make those decisions, so they are known for being quite indecisive.

If you are in a relationship with a Libra never make the mistake of forcing them to rush into making decisions.

This sometimes leads to Librans being involved in love triangles, and find themselves "torn between two loves".

Sometimes, this simply means they must choose between two careers, lifestyles or places to live.

At times the "two loves" could be a country or job, and a loved one.

But there are times when it's a straight choice between two lovers.

Libra is also one of the Zodiac signs in the element of Air.

This means Libra is associated with objectivity and logical, rational thinking.

So those born under this sign can on one hand be loving and loyal, and at other times appear cold and emotionally detached.

Like the Scales that symbolise their sign, Librans can swing from one mood to another and may occasionally overeat and over indulge.

The Bach Flower remedy Scleranthus helps maintain balance and boost vitality.

COMPATIBILITY: Librans are most compatible with fellow air signs Aquarius and Gemini.

They can receive help and support from Leo and Sagittarius, and have a love/hate relationship with Aries.

Your neighbouring sign Scorpio can make a loyal friend, while Cancer and Capricorn can bring out your competitive side.

Libra's Celtic tree sign is the Silver Birch, your sign's lucky tree. It has protective powers that will ensure that you travel safely through life. A sprig of birch leaves pinned to your lapel will, according to legend, act as a love charm and attract romance.

LIBRAN COLOURS: Silver, green and turquoise.

GEMSTONES: Blue and Aqua Sapphires, Opals.

LUCKY NUMBER: 7.

MAGICAL PASSION OINTMENT

YOU will need:

2 oz. cocoa butter

2 oz. jojoba oil

2 tsp melted beeswax (from a candle)

1 drop aniseed oil (don't overdo this; too much will burn your skin!)

5 drops rose oil

5 drops ylang ylang oil

A tiny pinch of mixed spice

Mix the cocoa butter and jojoba oil in a bowl and place in the microwave or on top of a pot of boiling water, until it begins to simmer.

Add the aniseed oil and then the rose oil, while stirring constantly.

Remove from the heat and stir until your mixture cools and becomes thick and creamy. Pour it into a clean, wide-mouthed jar, and refrigerate when cold.

Massage a little into your third eye (middle of the forehead), pulse points behind ears and knees, and on your wrists. Also use as sparingly as a hand cream, massaging it into the centre of the palms of your hands.
