IQBAL NAMED TO HEAD CHI-CHI'S MEXICAN RESTAURANT CHAIN; BISCHOFF TO HEAD JACK IN THE BOX MARKETING EFFORTS

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Officials at Foodmaker Inc. (NYSE: FM), the owner and operator of JACK IN THE BOX and CHI-CHI's Mexican restaurant chains, today named Mohammad Iqbal president of CHI-CHI's. With more than 21 years experience with Foodmaker, Iqbal was previously executive vice president of JACK IN THE BOX and responsible for marketing for the 1,172-restaurant chain.
Iqbal, 44, has also been tapped to head the Mexican division of Family Restaurants Inc., the corporation that will emerge from Foodmaker's previously announced transaction to sell CHI-CHI's.
Under definitive agreements with W.R. Grace & Co., and Restaurant Enterprises Group Inc. (REG), Foodmaker, Apollo Advisors and Leonard Green and Partners plan to acquire REG, which will simultaneously acquire CHI-CHI's. REG, currently the owner and operator of Carrows, Coco's, El Torito and other chains, will be renamed Family Restaurants. The transaction is expected to close early this year.
As president of the Mexican division of Family Restaurants, Iqbal will be responsible for the operation of more than 300 full-service restaurants throughout the nation.
"This management move presents an excellent opportunity for Family Restaurants to benefit from Mohammad's extensive operations and strategic marketing experience," said Jack Goodall, chairman and chief executive officer of Foodmaker. Goodall will also be chairman and chief executive officer of Family Restaurants.
Iqbal joined Foodmaker in 1972 as a restaurant employee and moved steadily through the company's ranks. He was named executive vice president of JACK IN THE BOX in 1986. During his tenure at JACK IN THE BOX, Iqbal guided the development of numerous trend-setting and innovative products, including The Fajita Pita, The Grilled Sourdough Burger and Finger Foods. Iqbal also pioneered the chain's two-tier marketing strategy, which features the concurrent promotions of premium menu offerings and attractive discounting of mainstream items.
Iqbal succeeds Joseph P. Micatrotto, who resigned as president of CHI-CHI's last month to pursue another career interest.
JACK IN THE BOX President Robert Nugent also announced that James Bischoff, 48, the former JACK IN THE BOX vice president in charge of marketing, will return to Foodmaker to replace Iqbal. Bischoff, who left Foodmaker in 1981, was responsible for launching JACK IN THE BOX's highly successful menu strategy which features the continual introduction of unique products designed to appeal to adult preferences.
Bischoff is the former president and chief executive officer of Orange Julius International and the former executive vice president of the family dining division of Morrison Restaurants Inc. He also held a senior position with Rich Biederman & Associates, a national restaurant consulting firm. Bischoff is recognized throughout the restaurant industry as an expert on restaurant marketing strategy.
"Both Jim and Mohammad have been instrumental in the development and successful implementation of the JACK IN THE BOX competitive strategy," said Nugent. "I'm very pleased that Jim will be returning to the company to once again guide our marketing efforts. His marketing knowledge and understanding of the JACK IN THE BOX operations will be invaluable to our organization."
With 1,172 restaurants located primarily in the southwest and western United States, JACK IN THE BOX is the nation's fifth largest chain in the fast-food hamburger segment. CHI-CHI'S is the nation's largest full-service Mexican restaurant chain, with 235 restaurants, primarily in the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic states.
