 IONICS APPOINTS JOHN W. ARNOLD MUNICIPAL MARKETING MANAGER
 WATERTOWN, Mass., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Ionics, Incorporated (NYSE: ION) announced today that John W. Arnold, Ph.D., has joined Ionics as municipal marketing manager in its Water Systems Division. Dr. Arnold will have responsibility for coordinating the marketing of Ionics' membrane-based seawater, brackish water, and wastewater desalting equipment and "own and operate" services for municipal use in the United States and Canada.
 A native of the United Kingdom, Dr. Arnold received his doctorate in chemical engineering from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London. He joined Ionics in 1960 and served for 21 years in various assignments, including director of product development, chief engineer, manager of engineering and construction, and area manager -- Saudi Arabia. In 1981 he left Ionics for a position as general manager for the Middle East for Ames Crosta Babcock. In 1984 he became director of sales and business development and later, vice president -- sales and marketing, for Hydranautics.
 Dr. Arnold rejoined Ionics in January 1992 as a consultant in charge of the commissioning of Ionics' Santa Barbara Desalting Project. As municipal marketing manager, he will initially be based in San Diego County, Calif.
 Commenting in the appointment, Arthur L. Goldstein, chairman and chief executive officer of Ionics, said, "All of us at Ionics are looking forward with great pleasure to working with John Arnold again. His 32 years of experience in all of the major membrane technologies and in working with consultants and governmental agencies will complement the regional marketing strengths of our area managers to strengthen Ionics' major presence in the rapidly growing municipal market for desalting and demineralizing water."
 Ionics is a separations technology company involved worldwide in the manufacture and sale of membranes and related equipment for the purification of water and the treatment of wastewater, in the supply of purified water and water treatment chemicals, and in the sale of bottled water and home water purifiers.
