 IOMEGA ANNOUNCES ACQUISITION OF DEVELOPMENTAL
THIN FILM HEAD TECHNOLOGY AND ASSETS
ROY, Utah, Jan. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Iomega Corp. (NASDAQ: IOMG) today announced that it has acquired certain assets, including intellectual property of Springer Technologies Inc., of Fremont, Calif. These assets will be used by Iomega in the continued development of proprietary thin film head technology
for application in future mass storage products. The purchase price of the assets included an initial payment of approximately $200,000 and future consideration contingent upon the successful development and commercialization of the thin film technology.
The technology offers the potential of multiple thin film elements in one magnetic recording head. According to Iomega president, Fred Wenninger, the acquired technology will require significant additional development by Iomega teams both in California and in Utah. "We are excited about the potential of this technology," added Wenninger. "We see potential applications in our proprietary Bernoulli(R) products as well as future Floptical(R) and tape drives."
Dr. Arun Malhotra will head up the Iomega Operation in Fremont, reporting to Iomega senior vice president, Anton Radman. Malhotra most recently held a senior engineering management position with Digital Equipment Corp., and previously worked for Hewlett Packard in several technical management positions.
Iomega Corp., Roy, Utah, develops, manufactures and sells high performance removable mass storage products for personal computers and workstations. Iomega's patented Bernoulli Technology(R) provides unlimited data storage capability by combining the removability of floppy disk drives with the high capacity and performance of rigid disk drives. Iomega's common stock is listed on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol IOMG.
