INVACARE UNVEILS COMPREHENSIVE NEW MOBILAIRE PRODUCT LINE
FOR HOME RESPIRATORY MARKET
ATLANTA, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Invacare Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS: IVCR) will unveil on Nov. 14 a comprehensive line of home respiratory products, marketed under the name Mobilaire(TM), at the National Home Health Care Exposition. Already the nation's largest manufacturer and distributor of wheelchairs, homecare beds and other home healthcare equipment, the new respiratory product line "will position Invacare as a major player in the growing field of respiratory products for home healthcare," said John J. Turanin, director of respiratory product marketing for Invacare. Industry sources estimate the market for home respiratory products to be about $400 million, and to be growing at approximately 12 percent annually. According to the most recent statistics from the American Lung Association, about 14 million Americans have chronic bronchitis and emphysema, a 43.5 percent increase from 1979 to 1989.
Invacare currently manufactures oxygen concentrators, machines which remove nitrogen from room air and deliver the remaining oxygen at a prescribed rate directly to the patient. They are used primarily by people with respiratory ailments, such as emphysema and asthma. Turanin said many of the products Invacare is introducing will complement its Mobilaire(TM) oxygen concentrators, allowing home healthcare equipment dealers to fill virtually all their orders for respiratory products from Invacare. He adds that dealers now must go to as many as 30 different manufacturers for the products they need. "Invacare has offered its three and five-liter Mobilaire oxygen concentrators for many years. With successful growth in concentrator sales, we felt it was time to expand our offering into a complete line of home respiratory products, which fits in well with Invacare's overall strategy of being a one-stop shop for home healthcare dealers," he said.
The new products Invacare will introduce to fill out its Mobilaire(TM) respiratory line include:
Passport(TM) Nebulizer Compressor for aerosol therapy -- Invacare's Passport nebulizer is a medical device that aerosolizes liquid medication for oral inhalation, such as is required by asthma patients. Unlike most compressors on the market today, the Passport is lightweight and portable, "making it ideally suited for today's active lifestyles," Turanin said. The Passport has a sleek, non-medical appearance designed by the internationally acclaimed industrial design firm, Brook Stevens Design. Its 5-1/2 pound weight is 20 percent lighter than most competitive products. "Nebulizer compressors are a logical extension of Invacare's oxygen concentrator business, since people who have diseases requiring concentrators frequently must also use aerosol therapy," said Turanin.
Mobilaire(TM) 50 PSI Compressor -- The Mobilaire 50 PSI Compressor is a heavy duty nebulizer, especially suited to the delivery of Pentamidine, a highly potent antibiotic frequently prescribed for the treatment of Pneumocystis carinii Pneumonia, a disease often contacted by AIDS patients. Because of its strength, Pentamidine is commonly delivered in aerosol form. The Mobilaire 50 PSI Compressor fills this requirement, as well as other heavy duty nebulizer needs.
Mobilaire(TM) Aspirator -- Patients with lung disease often have difficulties removing secretions from their lungs. The Mobilaire Aspirator, a durable, high-performance product which is well-suited to the home healthcare environment, meets this need.
Mobilaire Precise-Rx(TM) Flowmeter Kit -- The Mobilaire Precise-Rx Flowmeter Kit is an oxygen concentrator accessory designed to provide precise low-dose oxygen applications for patients with low-flow oxygen prescriptions, such as children with respiratory diseases. Unlike competitive products, the Mobilaire Precise-Rx Flowmeter does not require a permanent alteration to the oxygen concentrator it is being used with. It also allows for gradually larger doses of medication, should the prescription change as patients grow or when their needs change otherwise. "For long-term use, the Precise-Rx will be a most economical way to provide very low-flow oxygen therapy," Turanin said.
Mobilaire(TM) Remote Flowmeter Kit -- the Mobilaire Remote Flowmeter Kit is a concentrator accessory designed to reduce problems associated with condensation in oxygen concentrator tubing, and to allow patients greater freedom of movement because the flowmeter and humidifier can be placed up to 50 feet from the concentrator. These features virtually eliminate tube condensation and the resulting need for dealer service calls.
Mobilaire(TM) Compressed Oxygen System and accompanying components -- Mobilaire Compressed Oxygen Systems are used for portability or as a power failure backup for patients using oxygen concentrators. The cylinders, made of aluminum, are durable enough to withstand substantial abuse and the regulators are backed up with a five-year warranty. Mobilaire Compressed Oxygen Systems are available either with a two-wheel cart or with a shoulder pack. The cart system containers hold 682 liters of oxygen U.S.P., while shoulder pack models hold 415 liters. Both are shipped pre-filled with oxygen, and so are available for use immediately upon delivery.
Mobilaire Sof-Waire(TM) Disposable Products for respiratory therapy -- Mobilaire Sof-Waire Respiratory Disposables cover virtually all fundamental home respiratory product categories, including nasal cannulas (devices which delivery oxygen to the patient), face masks, oxygen tubing, humidifier bottles and medication nebulizers. All are designed for maximum patient convenience and comfort, explained Turanin, simplifying patient compliance with physician treatment instructions.
Mobilaire(TM) Oxygen Concentrators for Europe & Japan -- Along with its domestic product launches, Invacare is introducing oxygen concentrators for the European and Japanese markets. For Europe, Invacare is introducing the Mobilaire V, a five-liter concentrator which operates on a 220-240 volt, 50 Hz current, applicable to virtually any European country. To serve the Japanese market, Invacare has created Mobilaire III, a virtually noiseless concentrator. "Performance and low noise levels are the primary criteria for home respiratory products in Japan," said Turanin.
With 1990 sales of $230 million, Invacare manufactures and distributes home healthcare and extended care equipment such as power and manual wheelchairs, respiratory equipment, hospital-type beds for the home, patient aids and three-wheel motorized scooters. Invacare is headquartered in Elyria, Ohio and has additional manufacturing locations in Ohio, Florida, California, Canada, Mexico, Great Britain and Germany.
