INVACARE LAUNCHES MORE THAN 75 NEW PRODUCTS; INTRODUCES REVOLUTIONARY
CO-OP PROGRAM AT 1991 NATIONAL HOME HEALTH CARE EXPOSITION
ATLANTA, Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- Invacare Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS: IVCR) today introduced more than 75 new healthcare products for home and institutional care and unveiled its One Stop Shopping Plus(TM) dealer marketing program at the National Home Health Care Exposition in the Georgia World Congress Center. Louis F.J. Slangen, Invacare's vice president of marketing and sales, said the new offerings are the most extensive in the firm's history. "We are significantly exceeding last year's record launch of 53 new products. New product innovation is essential for increasing market share and maintaining a competitive edge. In addition, the evolution of home healthcare equipment from a purely medical focus to a consumer-oriented focus makes new product innovation extremely exciting," he said.
Chief among the product category introductions are:
-- Action(TM) power wheelchairs and electronics -- Invacare has introduced Action Power, a total makeover of its power wheelchair line in terms of both electronics and aesthetics boasting updated styling and more hands-on control than ever before. Action Power's revolutionary Easy Remote Programmer(TM), a palm-sized, hand-held remote control keypad requiring only limited dexterity to operate, enables individuals using the chair to make adjustments to more than two dozen aspects of chair performance. In addition, the Action MKIII, an optional 1-1/2 pound printer, provides unmatched convenience by generating thermal printouts of the complete range of performance settings. The programmer and printer are available on the entire Action Power line.
-- Action Technology(TM) ultralight wheelchairs -- Invacare continues to expand both its composite and aluminum frame ultralight wheelchair offerings from Action Technology. All new models are: (1) Action FX - a high-performance, aerodynamically designed composite ultralight for sports use; (2) Action Super Pro-T - a sports-oriented rigid aluminum chair boasting roller blades in place of traditional front wheels and a squeeze frame design which lowers the athlete's center of gravity and improves stability; (3) Action MVP - a sleek folding aluminum chair with exceptional styling that looks, works and rides like a rigid. Updated options to existing products are (1) an adjustable-angle front end on the Action AC, a rigid frame composite chair with contemporary styling for everyday use, which allows personal front angle settings anywhere from 60 to 90 degrees; (2) a redesigned front end on the Action Jr., a folding aluminum ultralight for children, including an adjustable angle footplate and a one-piece adjustable angle footplate.
-- Avanti(TM) seating and positioning -- Invacare has introduced a comprehensive new line of innovative seating and positioning products providing postural support and pressure relief to persons with disabilities. The line includes wheelchair cushions, backrests, seating systems, supportive positioners and lap trays.
-- Mobilaire(TM) home respiratory care -- Invacare has launched a complete line of home respiratory products to supplement its oxygen concentrators, including nebulizers, compressors, flowmeters, aspirators, portable compressed oxygen systems, respiratory disposables. In addition, oxygen concentrators designed specifically for Europe and Japan have been introduced.
-- Comfort+Plus(TM) institutional rocking chairs -- Invacare has added two new rocking chairs to its line of institutional seating products. The new Comfort+Plus rockers were specifically designed to meet the needs of nursing home residents and persons with acute and/or chronic mental disabilities, in addition to the requirements of caregivers.
-- Action Lifestyles(TM) ambulatory and bath safety equipment -- Invacare has launched an all new premium line of ambulatory and bath safety products called Action Lifestyles with contemporary colors and updated designs that are a big departure from the traditional institutional-looking patient aids. The line includes canes, walkers, rollators, shower and bath transfer chairs, bedside commodes and rehab shower commodes.
-- Comfort+Plus(TM) foam pressure relief -- Invacare has developed a new therapeutic line of 31 Comfort+Plus(TM) Pressure Relief Foam products, including mattress pads, wheelchair cushions, pillows, wedges, collars, rolls and protectors, which provide resilient cushioning from pressure points resulting in persons who use wheelchairs, are bedridden or whose hips, spine, heels or other areas are subject to continuous pressure.
Slangen said that, in addition to Invacare's launch of some of the most innovative new designs in industry history, perhaps the firm's single most exciting new offering is not a product, but a dealer program called One Stop Shopping Plus(TM). "Our industry has undergone significant change in recent years. Dealers who carry our products face constant pressures related to the constraints of Medicare reimbursement and to growing competition from new entrants in the marketplace as mass merchandisers, discount stores and mail order catalogs recognize the potential opportunities in home health care," he said.
The first of its kind in the industry, Invacare's One Stop Shopping Plus(TM) has been specifically designed to assist dealers with the changing dynamics of the industry. Dealers who enter the One Stop Shopping Plus program commit to purchasing a specified percentage of their needs from Invacare. Based on the total percentage commitment, dealers accrue co-op funds at various rates, which can be applied toward a vast array of services to help strengthen their business, adapt to Medicare changes, streamline administrative tasks and become more aggressive marketers. The greater percentage they commit, the higher the co-op accrual rate. Those co-op credits can then be used (on a dollar-for-dollar matching basis with the dealer's investment) toward co-op advertising, computer services, merchandising and showroom design, legal and reimbursement consultation, accreditation assistance and sponsorship of local consumer athletes.
"At Invacare, we believe that our success is dependent upon the success of our dealers," said Slangen. "We've structured our One Stop Shopping program to help our dealers compete in the 90s," he said. Invacare's One Stop Shopping Plus program will be effective on Jan. 1, 1992.
With 1990 sales of $230 million, Invacare manufactures home healthcare and extended care equipment. Invacare is headquartered in Elyria, Ohio, and has additional manufacturing locations in Ohio, Florida, California, Canada, Mexico, Great Britain and Germany.
