INVACARE ADDS "TOP END" TO ACTION WHEELCHAIR LINE

ELYRIA, Ohio, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Invacare Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS: IVCR) today announced the acquisition of Top End, a firm that manufactures specialty products for sports and recreational use by people with physical disabilities. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
Top End, which is located in Pinellas Park, Fla., will continue to operate in that location under the direction of Chris and Mary Carol Peterson, the firm's founders. Products will be marketed under the name Top End by Action.
Commenting on the acquisition, A. Malachi Mixon III, Invacare's chairman, president and chief executive officer, said, "Acknowledging that people with disabilities are as interested in fitness and recreation as any other group, we have been evaluating several similar companies for quite some time. We pursued the acquisition of Top End because of the firm's reputation for innovation and quality. Top End is a proven performer from both the business and product perspective."
Mixon continued, "When you add the line of Top End products to our Action(TM), MVP(TM), Style(TM), Action Jr.(TM), Pro-T(TM), Super Pro-T(TM), Action AC(TM) and the new composite Action FX(TM), the fact that Action is the most complete, most advanced line of super-light, high performance equipment for active people with disabilities is indisputable."
Top End is the world's premier line of racing and sports equipment for people with disabilities. Athletes using Top End racing chairs won twenty-seven (27) gold medals in track events at the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona. The Gold Medal team in basketball from the Netherlands uses Top End's Terminator sports chair as does the current U.S. national champion quad rugby team - the Tampa Generals. Mixon added, "Wheelchair athletes, like all athletes, demand the best in their sports equipment. That's why so many champions choose Top End!"
The Top End by Action facility in Florida will be dedicated to manufacturing and marketing high-performance racing chairs, hand cycles and specialty wheelchairs for use in sports such as tennis, basketball and quad rugby. The Top End staff will also be charged with maintaining an aggressive research and development program for new products for active wheelchair users.
Top End by Action will be marketed through select dealerships across the nation. Because of the individualized nature of this high- performance equipment, orders will be placed directly with the Top End staff in Florida. Top End's advertising and promotional activities will be integrated into and coordinated with the marketing effort for all Action Superlite wheelchairs.
Invacare is the world's largest manufacturer and distributor of home medical equipment with 1992 sales of $305 million. In addition to its Action Superlites, Invacare's product lines include manual and power prescription wheelchairs, standard wheelchairs, hospital type beds for in-home use, patient aids, bath safety products and equipment for use in home respiratory care. Headquartered in Elyria, Ohio, Invacare has manufacturing facilities in Ohio, Florida, Texas, California, Mexico, Canada, Great Britain, France and Germany.
