 INVACARE ACQUIRES PERRY OXYGEN SYSTEMS;
 PREPARES FOR LAUNCH INTO LIQUID OXYGEN MARKET
 ELYRIA, Ohio, Aug. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Invacare Corporation (NASDAQ/NMS: IVCR) today announced that it has acquired certain assets of Perry Oxygen Systems, Inc., of Port St. Lucie, Fla., for an undisclosed amount of cash. The transaction closed this morning. Perry manufactures liquid oxygen systems and oxygen delivery systems. The Perry operations will be relocated into Invacare's manufacturing facilities located in Sanford, Fla. Perry executives and co-founders Jack Enterline and Timothy Goldsbury will remain with Invacare in management capacities.
 A. Malachi Mixon III, Invacare's chairman, president and chief executive officer, stated that the acquisition contributes significantly to Invacare's strategic mission of continued expansion of its home respiratory product line. "We're very excited about this segment of our business, since it represents strong growth opportunities," he explained.
 Industry sources approximate the U.S. market for home respiratory products to be over $400 million and to be growing by about 10-12 percent annually. The liquid oxygen segment comprises about $50 million. According to the most recent statistics from the American Lung Association, about 14 million Americans have chronic bronchitis and emphysema, a 43.5 percent increase from 1979 to 1989.
 Last fall, Invacare expanded its Mobilaire home respiratory product line which now includes oxygen concentrators, remote and pediatric flowmeters, nebulizer compressors, aspirators, compressed oxygen systems and respiratory disposables. The new liquid oxygen products will be introduced under the Mobilaire name later this year, following design enhancements. Like all Invacare's products, they will be sold through Invacare's sales force which is the largest in the home health care industry. Additionally, the Perry acquisition gives Invacare the patent rights to a new pulse dose oxygen delivery technology. Used with liquid oxygen or compressed gas systems, this technology conserves oxygen, reducing costs and extending the length of time between refilling requirements.
 John J. Turanin, director of respiratory product marketing for Invacare, explained that the addition of liquid oxygen will not only round out Invacare's respiratory product line, but will also give it the broadest standard home respiratory product offering in the industry. "Offering liquid oxygen along with our concentrators and compressed gas systems gives us every oxygen modality for home respiratory dealers," he said, emphasizing that liquid oxygen is the standard of care for ambulatory oxygen patients, because portable units can be filled from a home base unit, giving the individual more freedom of movement. "No other manufacturer yet offers such a complete home respiratory selection," he concluded.
 As part of its growing involvement in home respiratory care, Invacare recently established an endowment fund with the American Respiratory Care Foundation to administer "The Invacare Award for Excellence in Home Respiratory Care." The award will be given annually at the American Association for Respiratory Care convention to an outstanding repiratory care practitioner working in the home care setting.
 Invacare manufactures and distributes respiratory equipment, power and manual wheelchairs, hospital-type beds for the home, patient aids, three-wheel motorized scooters and other home healthcare and extended care equipment. With annual sales in 1991 of $263 million, Invacare is headquartered in Elyria, Ohio. Manufacturing locations include Ohio, Florida, Texas, California, Canada, Mexico, Great Britain, and Germany. Products are distributed through a worldwide network of over 10,000 medical equipment dealer locations.
