INTRAFED, CALERA, AND EXCALIBUR TEAM UP TO PROVIDE FULLY-INTEGRATED, TURN-KEY IMAGING SOLUTION

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- INTRAFED, Inc., Calera Recognition Systems, and Excalibur Technologies Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: EXCA) have joined forces in announcing ICEworks(TM), a fully-integrated, turn-key imaging solution. ICEworks is the industry's first scalable, seamless solution for automating the entire process of scanning optical character recognition (OCR), indexing, and retrieving information. The announcement was made in conjunction with the Imaging Expo trade show.
ICEworks combines products from all three vendors to offer exceptional functionality and performance at an unprecedented low cost. "As an integrated product, built on an open architecture and capable of performance equivalent to systems three times its price, ICEworks bends the imaging price performance curve, making high-volume, turn-key systems accessible to most organizations, not just the Fortune 500," said John R. Meshinsky, president of INTRAFED.
"Our end-user research at Dataquest suggests that there is a very strong market demand for high-volume, highly accurate image recognition systems," commented Pam Bliss, senior analyst in Dataquest's Document Imaging Service. "However, currently a gap exists between very high- priced systems that can deliver these capabilities and low-end systems that cannot. Users want accuracy, power, and convenience -- all rolled into one bundle," she continued. ICEworks turn-key solution is specifically designed to satisfy this market need at a very affordable price point.
ICEworks includes INTRAFED's PowerScan(TM) technology which provides high-volume, high-speed automated input. It also incorporates the industry's most accurate OCR, provided by Calera's Adaptive Recognition Technology(TM) running on an MM2400(TM) OCR Processor. In addition, ICEworks includes the most advanced document management and retrieval software available today, EFS (Electronic Filing Software) from Excalibur. EFS uses Adaptive Pattern Recognition Processing for automatic, full-text, content indexing and pattern-based retrieval. Additionally, ICEworks is integrated with an intuitive, easy-to-learn, graphical user interface (GUI) to minimize training overhead and maximize productivity. According to Steve Hayden, president and CEO of Calera: "For the first time, a leading systems integrator has put together a volume-capable, turn-key, imaging system that combines the three key technologies, fast scanning input, accelerated and accurate OCR, and a 100 percent confidence level of retrieval from Excalibur, in a fashion that allows for scan-to-retrieve, with every word an index, in a matter of seconds."
ICEworks' full-text OCR, content indexing, control field indexing, and filing are automatic, increasing throughput and allowing companies to use personnel resources more efficiently. At the heart of ICEworks is Calera's MM2400, providing the world's most accurate omnifont OCR and the fastest OCR output by a factor of four. Combining the capabilities of the OCR processor with the unparalleled fault tolerance of the Excalibur EFS architecture, information can be retrieved with 100 percent confidence without time-consuming editing or overhead. ICEworks base configuration can process up to 10,000 images per day, and its open architecture allows easy expandability as needs grow. It is well-suited for applications such as conversion bureaus, litigation support, federal and local law enforcement agencies, and any organization that needs to find documents in an unstructured format.
Dave Jones, vice president of marketing for Excalibur, commented: "INTRAFED has taken three best-of-class imaging products and integrated them into the industry's lowest-priced, highest performance turn-key system. For the first time, users can overcome the costly barrier of getting documents into a system and can quickly realize the benefit and productivity of having easy access to company information on-line. And, by teaming our efforts, INTRAFED, Calera, and Excalibur have done the systems integration for the user at a fraction of the market cost."
 Price & Availability
ICEworks will be available in November with a base price of $129,900. Among its components are either a Ricoh IS520 or Bell-Howell 6338 duplex scanner, a Calera MM2400 OCR Processor, licenses for Excalibur EFS text retrieval/document management software system, a 1.3 gigabyte external optical drive for image storage, laser printer post- script output, and is supported by four leading UNIX workstations (Sun, HP, IBM, and DEC) or other popular platforms. The sales forces of all three companies will support the solution, which will be delivered, installed and maintained by INTRAFED. The single-source support system will eliminate the need for users to sort through multiple vendors to obtain support for different components of their systems.
