INTERSOLV ANNOUNCES MAJOR NEW RELEASE OF APS APPLICATION GENERATOR
 NOW SUPPORTING CLIENT/SERVER APPLICATIONS
ROCKVILLE, Md., Sept. 14 /PRNewswire/ -- INTERSOLV today announced the general availability within North America of a new product named APS Version 2.2. Major new functions now enable APS to generate Client/Server (Cooperative Processing) applications with Graphical User Interfaces. Unique features of the APS approach include complete integration of GUI specification within the APS environment, automatic code splitting producing a GUI client and one or more cooperative server programs from a single specification and distribution of both function and data between clients and servers.
The new APS was developed in response to significant customer and market demand for an effective solution to the problem of building multi-platform Client/Server applications. In customer focus groups, INTERSOLV has repeatedly heard the concern that development tools target either conventional mainframe applications or PC LANs, but rarely both. Such tools do not address the numerous issues that arise when building enterprise applications across multiple platforms. Forced into piecemeal use of tactical Client/Server tools, customers have experienced problems with added training overhead, multiple learning curves and fragmentation of their development culture.
INTERSOLV has built on the proven APS foundation to provide a powerful environment for building GUI Client/Server applications, while shielding developers from the messy details of the underlying technology. The list of target environments for APS has grown to include COBOL GUI client programs that use a LAN database server or that connect via auto-generated APPC to one or more generated server programs, or a combination. This flexibility makes APS the environment of choice for building mission-critical enterprise applications, especially where high-volume transaction processing is required.
"APS 2.2 is one of our most exciting product releases because of its ability to free our customers from the limits of other tools for building GUI Client/Server applications and because it delivers this capability in a familiar development context," said Kevin J. Burns, president/CEO of INTERSOLV. APS solves the problems of integrating Client/Server development with conventional mainframe development by delivering an integrated development environment which can address development and maintenance for all the target environments (GUI PC/LAN, GUI PC/Cooperative, AS/400 Midrange, MVS Mainframe), fulfilling both present and future customer needs.
APS runs on 386 and 486 PCs under OS/2 1.3 or 2.0 and PC-DOS. Workgroup development is supported through the LAN-exploitive APS repository and through integration with INTERSOLV's PVCS for configuration management. APS 2.2 now generates GUI client programs for OS/2 1.3 or 2.0 and remote server programs for OS/2 1.3 or 2.0, CICS, and native MVS. Database targets for cooperative processing servers are OS/2 Database Manager and DB2, for PC and mainframe platforms, respectively.
Building on its market lead in generation of mainframe applications, APS now provides the leading solution for distributed- function Client/Server, by integrating development of client and server components within a single specification. This provides three benefits:
-- If a customer is ready for Client/Server today, APS provides a powerful solution for building cooperative transaction-processing applications, with distributed function and data. APS use of APPC in providing Client/Server access to DB2 leverages CICS and MVS to open up mainframe DB2 data to production PC GUI applications. This is superior to alternatives which access DB2 through a gateway like a database server.
-- If a customer is not ready to invest in Client/Server technology, but wants to protect the investment to be made in conventional systems, APS provides a conversion path to transform them into GUI Client/Server systems, when the customer is ready.
-- For either type of customer, APS leverages the skills of the staff currently in place, without sacrificing functionality. And unlike alternatives, APS provides an integrated conceptual model for client and server components of a distributed application, through automatic code splitting. This eliminates the need for a developer to consider the client and server components separately, keeping the focus on what the application should do. When generating code from the unified specification, APS automatically splits it into client and server components as required to fit the target platforms, including all the APPC communications code required to link these components.
"APS 2.2 and its distributed function and client/server generation capabilities, along with its use of native APPC communication protocols, gives us a tremendous amount of flexibility in how our application is optimized. Being able to distribute business functions between client and server allows us to capitalize on the strengths of the client and server, as well as reduce network traffic. The new Graphical Application Painter allows a traditional mainframe developer to leverage their experience in the new world of client/server applications," said Travis Morse, product line leader, client/server systems support at ALCOA.
APS is priced at $9,500 per authorized user and is available for immediate delivery. INTERSOLV has more than 110,000 users at approximately 10,000 customer sites worldwide and is publicly held. Its stock is traded on the NASDAQ OTC market under the trading symbol ISLI. INTERSOLV's corporate headquarters is located at 3200 Tower Oaks Blvd., Rockville, Md. 20852; phone 301-230-3200, fax 301-881-4808.
