INTERNATIONAL TECHNOLOGY CORP., AS PART OF THE BECHTEL TEAM, ANNOUNCES AWARD OF ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION MANAGEMENT CONTRACT AT THE DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY HANFORD SITE

TORRANCE, Calif., Jan. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- International Technology Corp. (NYSE: ITX) (IT) announced today that the Environmental Restoration Management Contract (ERMC) for the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Hanford site has been awarded to the Bechtel team. The team, led by Bechtel Hanford Inc., includes IT, CH2M Hill and Thermo Analytical Inc. The Hanford facility, a former weapons material production site, is located on 560 square miles in southeastern Washington. The scope of the work under the contract involves managing the cleanup of radiological and chemical contamination from 40 years of nuclear research and production.
The five-year contract, with one three-year renewal option, calls for a transition period to begin March 1, 1993, with full operations by July 1, 1993. Although the scope and value of the work under the cost plus award fee contract will be more accurately defined in the initial phases of the project, it is estimated that the minimum value is approximately $800 million for the first five years. IT's estimated portion is approximately 30 percent.
IT's scope of work will include remedial investigation/feasibility studies, decommissioning and decontamination planning, RCRA field investigation/corrective measures studies, overflow analytical testing, technology demonstration and various other environmental assessment activities.
IT plans to establish a wholly owned subsidiary, IT Hanford Inc., located in Richland, Wash., to execute work under the project. IT currently employs more than 125 associates located in the Richland area in its engineering and laboratory operations.
"The award of the Hanford ERMC acknowledges the diverse capabilities of the Bechtel team in areas of project management, environmental engineering and technology applications," said Robert B. Sheh, president and chief executive officer of IT Corp.
"This project is the largest award ever made to IT in its 67-year history," said Murray H. Hutchison, chairman of the board. "IT will play a leading role in demonstrating its expertise in developing emerging environmental solutions at Hanford."
International Technology Corp., based in Torrance, is a leading environmental management company providing services to government and industry. The company's common stock is traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol ITX. Bechtel is a privately held engineering and construction firm with headquarters in San Francisco.
