U.S. INTERNATIONAL TRANSACTIONS

In the first quarter of 2001, the goods deficit fell to $112.5
billion, from $118.5 billion in the fourth quarter. The current
account deficit fell to $109.6 billion in the first quarter, from
$116.3 billion in the fourth quarter. (Series revised.)

In the financial account, U.S. claims on foreigners reported by U.S. banks increased $90.0 billion in the first quarter of 2001, following an increase of $71.6 billion in the fourth quarter. U.S. liabilities to private foreigners reported by U.S. banks, excluding Treasury securities, decreased $0.5 billion in the first quarter, in contrast to an increase of $43.4 billion in the fourth quarter. (Series revised.)
