INTERNATIONAL LONGSHOREMEN'S ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT JOHN BOWERS ELECTED TO TOP ITF POST

NEW YORK, May 17 /PRNewswire/ -- John Bowers, president of the International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO was elected vice chairman of the dockers section of the International Transport Workers Federation (ITF) during recent meetings in Hamburg, Germany. The ILA leader already serves as a vice president of the ITF, a position he was first elected to in 1987.
The ITF dockers section represents 101 unions in over 80 countries worldwide, with an affiliated membership of nearly 350,000. North and South America, Europe, Africa and the Asia/Pacific regions are all represented in the section. Since the collapse of communism in 1989, new dockers' unions from Slovenia, Croatia, Bulgaria, Romania and Russia have also joined.
Internationally, the ITF is the organized voice of dock workers unions, representing dockers in the United Nations-linked international Labour Organization and in various regional bodies.
Mr. Bowers also serves on the Executive Board and Management Committee of the ITF, one of five labor officials worldwide to occupy that position.
A veteran of more than five decades with the ILA, Bowers also serves as a vice president and Executive Board member of the New York State AFL-CIO; a vice president of the AFL-CIO's Maritime Trades Department and is president of ILA Local 824 in Manhattan.
"I am deeply honored to be elected vice chairman of the ITF's dockers section," Mr. Bowers said. "It's gratifying to receive the support of hundreds of thousands of union members around the world and I recognize it as much a tribute to the ILA. I stand ready to uphold the rights and protection of all port workers everywhere."
